Art Schwarzwaelder was born in Pittsburgh in 1953. His parents emigrated to the United States from Europe during World War II. A first-generation American, Art was raised in a family which emphasized the importance of hard work and the value of higher education. He grew up in the South Hills of Pittsburgh (Scott Township), and worked at a variety of jobs throughout his years as a student.
Art graduated as Valedictorian of the Class of 1971 from Chartiers Valley High School. He was then accepted to Dartmouth College, where he was awarded a Bachelor of Arts Degree, Summa Cum Laude, and invited to join the academic honorary society, Phi Beta Kappa. Following graduation from college, Art pursued his legal education at the University Of Virginia School Of Law, where he earned a Juris Doctorate in 1978. Art was the first member of his family to graduate from college.
After graduation, Art was admitted to the Bar of Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, the United States District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.
Attorney Schwarzwaelder began his legal career as a defense lawyer in a large Pittsburgh law firm. While at this firm, he primarily represented physicians and hospitals in medical malpractice actions. From this experience on the defense side, Art gained a broad perspective, and learned first-hand how and why medical errors all too often occur, and how they can be prevented.
After achieving partnership at his old firm, Art decided to leave the defense bar, and apply the skills he developed to the exclusive representation of individuals and families harmed by the carelessness of others. He is committed to recovering full and fair compensation for his clients. He recognizes the importance of thorough investigation and meticulous research to achieve the just resolution of the many physical, emotional, and economic challenges faced by his clients.
For over 14 years, Art has only represented victims of negligence, with a primary focus on plaintiffs medical malpractice. In this field of law, he has served clients in cases involving birth injuries, delayed diagnosis, surgical mishaps, and medication errors. In addition to medical malpractice, Art has litigation experience in the following areas: motor vehicle accidents, premises liability/falls, defective products, and business and financial disputes.
Attorney Schwarzwaelder has successfully represented many clients who have obtained substantial monetary recoveries. These include multi-million dollar recoveries.
Art has been recognized by his peers. For over 24 years, he has been the recipient of the highest AV rating for ability and ethics issued by Martindale Hubbell, the nationally recognized authority on attorney ratings. In 2013, Art was selected as Pittsburgh Lawyer of the Year by Best Lawyers in America in the area of Plaintiffs Medical Malpractice Law. Other recognition includes repeated listings in Pennsylvania Super Lawyers and Best Lawyers in America under the category of Plaintiffs Medical Malpractice Law, and selection to the Academy of Trial Lawyers of Allegheny County. This organization has a limited membership of 250 active trial lawyers equally divided between the plaintiffs and defense bar. In 2004, Art was invited to join the American College of Trial Lawyers. This prestigious national organization accepts no more than 1% of the lawyers in any state by invitation only.
Art has also served as an invited speaker and faculty member at continuing education seminars focusing on medical malpractice and civil litigation sponsored by the Pennsylvania Bar Institute, Pennsylvania Association of Justice, Allegheny County Bar Association, and the Allegheny County Medical Society.
Married for over 28 years, Art and his wife have raised three children. When not working, Art enjoys spending time with his close knit immediate and extended family who continue to reside in the Pittsburgh area.
